I have a 45 caliber Cherokee and love it as a ‘carrying’ gun. I find it deadly at 50 yards or so, with its zero at 75 yards, my personal maximum maximum range with it. You're right in saying that you will have to experiment with your gun to find out for sure. Most of my .54's do fine for deer with .530 roundball in .015 patch over 80 grains of 3f Swiss. I have two Pedersoli SXS shotguns - one 12 gauge and one 10 gauge and one Navy Arms 12 gauge made by Pietta. All of them are from the late 70's to the mid 80's. The 10 gauge has very good triggers so does the Navy Arms Pietta. Modern guns with modern loads really don't need that much constriction but with muzzleloaders we still are duplicating the old loadings. So the recess for a full choke 12 is .020" deep, which of course enlarges the bore diameter by the required .040".Weighs just over 8lbs, so it's quite handy for a double barrel gun. Barrel swivel detents are nice and solid. Seems in decent shape overall. They are a copy of the Allen & Thurber rifles of the 1850's and 1860's, which were produced in Worcester, Massachusetts. A rather unique rifle in the era of the caplock, they used a casting to house the action, and a very large casting in the butt of the stock.I use the rear tang screw and if needed, drill and tap a new whole in the tang. Some of the TC rifle and some of the Pedersoli's come with a hole already there, but of not, do not panic, it's an easy 5 minute job to drill and tap a 6/32 or 8/32 hole. This is 115 x 0.7, the ratio found on Western Powders website. All my loads are weighed using the 0.7 factor. What i do is weigh each charge, then pour it into the charging tubes. For example, right now i am shooting my 50 caliber rifle quite a lot, and my load is 105g Blackhorn ...Weighs just over 8lbs, so it's quite handy for a double barrel gun. Barrel swivel detents are nice and solid. Seems in decent shape overall. If the breeching is ok, and the barrel is not excessively pitted, it should be ok to shoot.This post is trying to show anyone interested in one method to drill and tap for a TH. If you don't have a drill press and try to tap free hand it could get real ugly. The TH needs to be counter sunk flush with the filed on/in barrel flat.
